Sleep Issues
Sleep is vital for the body and mind to function at its optimal level. Everyone, at some point in their lives, experiences a sleepless night or some kind of sleep problem. However if it is an ongoing issue then it is time to do something about it, not just to feel rested but also for your health, for your emotional wellbeing and even for your relationships on a day to day basis. Having a good sleep is just as important as eating the right food, getting enough of exercise and surrounding yourself with positivity.
Some sleep issues include:
- Insomnia
- Getting to sleep
- Staying asleep
- Quality of sleep
- Apnoea
- Feeling Tired regardless of the amount of sleep
How it affects everyday life
Most people who experience sleep problems can develop an increased susceptibility to infections as their immune system is under a lot of pressure due to not being able to rest and repair at night when they should be sleeping. Also many find that either the patience levels are low or that they don’t care about stuff the way they used to because they are literally too tired to care. People can gain weight easily and find it extremely difficult to lose it. Sleep issues can reduce cognitive response and brain fog which in turn causes people to experience forgetfulness, indecisiveness or loss of rationale. It often affects people’s activity levels and sometimes people can also experience depression as well as loss of motivation (which then becomes a catch 22).
Herbal medicine’s approach in treatment, management and support
There can be many reasons why someone is not getting enough or good quality sleep and so the treatment reflects this in its multifaceted approach. The main objective in the consultation is to ascertain the root cause of the problem as it is not always very clear. It can be caused by stress, trauma, worry, bad habits, hormonal issues or digestive issues. If stress, trauma or anxiety are involved other than herbs, certain tools to help overcome these things to ultimately help sleep is given, which helps general well-being. There are many herbs that can help for example wild-lettuce, hops, chamomile, vervain and californian poppy to name just a few. These can be given in tincture form or in tea, depending on the person. Also essential oils can be very helpful also. Regardless of the cause, good sleep hygiene is always encouraged so as to attain a great quality of sleep.
How long is the Average Treatment?
It is difficult to determine how long it will take any individual to start seeing results, it usually depends on the following:
- How you react to herbs
- Your compliance to taking the herbs and making the recommended changes
- How long you have had the condition
- The severity of the condition
What you need to do?
Please be prepared that it takes time for the herbs to work. Herbal medicine does not work like pharmaceutical drugs. They often require some time, especially as they tend to work gently and subtly. This is not a quick fix.
